Keeping Your WordPress Site Safe & Secure

Logo for WordPress Maintenance page

As businesses become more dependant on the internet and their websites it is critical that this resource is protected from the bad guys and also from potential conflicts as the software is updated. This is where our WordPress Maintenance packages can help.

With WordPress being one of the most popular platforms online, unfortunately it also makes it one of the most attacked. The ease of use means that there are many people who run sites without the knowledge of how to keep their site safe & secure. This leaves many sites vulnerable to attack, the most common reasons being through poor security or through vulnerabilities in out of date themes, plugins or WordPress core platform.

Over 50% of sites we check have an out of date WordPress platform and we suspect that it will be even higher for themes and plugins! To make the situation worse the open source nature of WordPress (and many other platforms), which contributes to the continued development also means that vulnerabilities are released into the public domain fairly quickly after they are found. This also means the hackers also get this information!

Don’t panic though. For a small monthly fee we can ensure that your site is kept up to date greatly reducing the risk of your site being compromised with one of our WordPress Maintenance plans. If the worst were to happen you will always have an up to date copy of the site which can be quickly restored to get you up and running again. Backups are stored securely in an offsite location so even if the website failure is with your hosting company’s servers failing we can still restore your site.

How To Decide The Best WordPress Maintenance Plan For You

Apart from the monthly cost the decision on which WordPress maintenance plan to use depends the type of website you are running and how you manage your risks (or don’t!)

Basic Plan

This is the absolute minimum requirement. If you do not carry out these actions on a regular basis then you stand the risk of your site being hacked and potentially losing the site content. You also have a greater risk of something going wrong when you do upgrade the site as you will probably be upgrading all your plugins, themes and WordPress core by several updates. So if you don’t want a contract please make sure you take some time out at least once a month to update and backup your site yourself.

The minimum requirement – suitable for sites with little or no content change where a one month old backup being restored will not be a big deal.

Standard Plan

This is the package that suits the majority of small to medium business sites who are maybe adding a few posts every month or updating site details regularly. There is a risk that if something goes wrong you may lose a few days of content changes, but nothing that will cause major damage to the business. With a free restore service if the site is hacked or infected with malware you have all the bases covered.

Advanced Plan

Ideal for sites where there is a lot of activity, especially if this is business critical such as customer registrations or e-commerce. With the knowledge that your site is being backed up daily you have the peace of mind that you will never lose more than a days worth of information. (If you require more regular backups than daily then please contact us to discuss the options available.)

WordPress Maintenance FAQs

Will Taking Out One Of Your Plans Guarantee My Site Wont Get Hacked?
No is the simple answer. Nothing can guarantee that someone will not hack your site. What it does do is reduce the risk and ensure that you have recent backups should the worst happen. You should still ensure that you take all normal precautions like using a complex password, minimising the number of users, giving users the minimum level of access to allow them to do their job.
If My Site Is Corrupted Or Hacked how do I Restore It?
There are a few ways to restore your site:

  • If you are on our standard plan or premium plan then just contact us if your site has been hacked and we will restore it for you.
  • If you have got something wrong and want your site restoring and are on the premium plan then just contact us and we will roll back your site to the last backup.
  • If you want to restore the site yourself or do not have a package level that gives you free restore then in the admin section of your site go to setting>updraftplus backups in the left menu, click on the Existing Backups tab and then click on restore on the latest backup. Follow the onscreen instructions and you should be back up and running in no time.
  • Even if you are not on a plan that gives you a free restore then you can still get us to do it at a highly competitive rate.
What Access Will You Need To My Site?
We will require full admin level access to your site backend to allow me to monitor your site for updates. Depending on your hosting company I may need cPanel or FTP access to make a minor adjustment to your wp-config.php file to allow automatic backups to run properly.
How does this all work?
We use a variety of plugins depending on your level of service and then monitor your site on a sub-domain of this site on a daily basis to ensure everything is up to date and to update as necessary. All sites have Updraft Plus installed and the monitoring plugin installed, the standard and premium packages also have Word Fence installed. The uptime monitoring is carried out using a third party service and does not require a plugin.
How Do I Cancel My Contract And What Happens When I Do?
You can cancel your contract at any time just by sending us an email. The base level of support is an annual contract and the other service levels are rolling monthly contracts or annual contracts depending on what you have chosen. For monthly contracts We use PayPal recurring charges so you will also have to cancel your payments with PayPal. Unfortunately we can not do this for you as it has to be done through your PayPal account.

Once your account has been cancelled we will remove the plugins. Please make sure that you have something else in place to protect your data before you cancel. As we use a premium version of the backup plugin we will not be able to leave this plugin on the site. You can however download a free version directly from wordpress.org. We will retain your existing backups for 6 months after you cancel.

Can I Change The Plan I Am On?
You can upgrade or downgrade you WordPress Maintenance package at any time. Just send us an email and we will make the necessary adjustments.
Can This Service Be Used With Any Hosting Company?
We manage sites on several hosting platforms and have yet to find one that we cannot operate on. There is an issue with Heart Internet which we have mentioned above, but this is easily resolved. If we find out that we cannot keep you site updated because of your hosting company server setup we will attempt to resolve this with your provider. If we cannot resolve the issue we can offer you a hosting package (possibly at a better price than you currently have!) or will give you a full refund.
